Book Club and Fish Walk

Image
Book Club   I am a part of two book clubs.  One book club is connected to the PTFA for the girls' school and tends to be more self-help, parenting type of books.  The other book club is connected to the UN and seems to be mostly fiction books.   I love both book clubs, but honestly have a hard time reading two books a month.  All too often, I opt to chill out in front of the tv/computer at night instead of engage my brain in books.   Because of this, I did not finish the most recent book for the UN women's book club. (Honestly, I hardly started it).   I debated going to the meeting at all, but was intrigued because it was an Iranian book  hosted by an Iranian woman living in Suva.  I am SO glad I went.     I love this book club.  It is so diverse.   The group that night consisted of two women from South and Central America, two Americans, one Russian, one German, one Brit, one Palestinian, and two Iranians (I thin...

Visit

News flash....it's sunny in Suva today!  It makes me happy!   It's amazing how much the nice weather affects my attitude!   I'm crossing my fingers for nice weather when Warren's family visits soon, but either way it will just be nice to have family here. The past week has been good.  Probably the biggest thing going on is that Carrie Hessler Radelet, ( Read more here ) the Director of Peace Corps world wide is in Fiji!  This is a big deal.  She is a big deal.  She was appointed by President Obama and comes from four generations of Peace Corps  family members.  She oversees 68  Peace Corps countries.   It is so cool that she is here!    On Monday night we went to a meal at the country director's house with her.  I really don't know if I've ever eaten dinner with someone so important.  The amazing thing is though, she is such a huge deal, but you wouldn't know it when you talk to her.  Of course, sh...

Six Month Suva Slump

Image
This may be the longest time I’ve taken to write between things.  It’s not really because I’ve been so busy (although my time is full) or because I have so much to say but just cannot find the time to sit and write…   I think it’s because I have hit a slump.    For some reason I’ve been very melancholy this week. Ultimately, I miss home.  I don’t want to move back home.  I know this is the right place for our family.  I love the adventure my family is on… but I miss my friends and family right now.  I feel very, very far away and I don’t know when I’ll be heading home again.   Several friends have promised that they are visiting here…and those promises help immensely…but I know how incredibly hard it is to get here, both logistically and financially.  Until friends have tickets, I am not going to hold my breath.   I know our families will come and that also helps soften the blow of being away… but with the ex...

Kate Anderson Passin June 9 at 3:57pm  ·  Proof my kids go to an international school: the conversation on ride home with playdate…. I ask, "So, where is your family from?" She answers, "My mom is from Ethiopia, my dad is from France, my brother was born in Thailand , and I was born here in Fiji." She then proceeds to tell me about some of her travels to Hong Kong, America, and New Zealand in the following conversation. Pretty cool for six years old!!!
